Convicted murderer and rapist William Archie Fain, who was paroled three years ago despite a 62,000-signature protest petition, suffered a broken neck when his car slammed into the back of another auto on a freeway near San Jose. The California Highway Patrol said Fain’s vehicle was clocked at more than 100 m.p.h. at the time of the crash. He was reported in serious condition in a San Jose hospital. Fain was sentenced to death in 1967 after being convicted of murdering a 17-year-old Stanislaus County youth with a shotgun and of raping two high school girls, but the sentence was later reduced to life imprisonment. Since his release from prison in 1983, Fain has been arrested on suspicion of being a peeping tom and later on suspicion of drunk driving.
