Hot Day Is One for the Books
The guys at the main fire station in Santa Ana, whose duty it is to record the low and high temperatures of the day, got a little excited Tuesday night when informed they had missed some history.
Earlier, the station had recorded a high of 90 degrees. But the firemen manning the station were unaware that the reading had broken the previous high of 89 for a Nov. 11 in the county set back in 1900.
The 90-degree temperature was not only a local milestone, it also was the highest temperature in the nation Tuesday.
Fireman Jim Yoshida answered the telephone at the station Tuesday night and said no one there had suspected the warm temperature had any particular significance.
“That’s great. Now I know we made history,” he said.
Yoshida put down the telephone and hollered the news to his colleagues. Applause and cheers could be heard in the background.
Temperatures are suppose to climb back into the mid-80s in the county today with dry Santa Ana winds gusting to 25 m.p.h. But chances are slim that new high records will be broken today or Thursday.
The county record for today is 93, set in 1974. The record for Nov. 13 is 97, set back in 1933.
