Thirty-six people were left homeless on Tuesday after fire erupted in a two-story home and spread to another before Los Angeles firefighters could douse the flames.

Fire Department spokesman Jim Wells said the fire caused $90,000 damage to a home at 1650 N. Alvarado St. and $40,000 to the home next door. Cause of the fire was under investigation.

Thirty-six people were living in the two single-family homes, Wells said. The Red Cross set up a temporary shelter at Marshall High School.
