Garza Withdraws From Fight Against Thigpen in Spruce Goose Dome
Former World Boxing Council super bantamweight champion Jaime Garza, a knockout victim in his only professional loss, has been KOed again--by a flu bug.
Garza, scheduled to fight the main event on tonight’s inaugural boxing card inside the Spruce Goose Dome in Long Beach, had to step aside at the last minute due to illness.
Darryl Thigpen, Garza’s scheduled opponent in the 12-round featherweight match, will instead fight Luis Hernandez. Thigpen is 20-4 with 17 knockouts, Hernandez 11-7-1 with six knockouts.
The winner will face Garza on Dec. 10 under the Spruce Goose.
Garza (43-1, 41 knockouts), who learned to fight as a youngster on the streets of Pacoima, had seen the Thigpen match as the next logical step on his fight to get back in the title picture. Garza had been knocked out of that picture by Juan Meza two years ago. Meza stopped Garza in the first round in a New York bout to capture his title.
It took Garza a year to get back in the ring after that upset loss. He has since fought three times, winning each by a knockout.
