Hawthorne : Eminent Domain Started

Share

The City Council took the first step in taking a 3.4-acre parcel through eminent domain to provide replacement locations for businesses that will be displaced from a nearby redevelopment project.

Ford Street Management Co., owner of the lot at Inglewood Boulevard and 145th Street, argued unsuccessfully that the city’s taking of the property was not necessary because the company was working with another firm that would buy the property and assist in relocation of businesses without cost to the city.

However, an attorney for the city said the city had the right to condemn the property because it was needed for the redevelopment project.

The city has approved tentative plans for a $125-million high-rise hotel and office project for a 20-acre lot just west of the San Diego Freeway.
