Hawthorne : Firemen OK Pension Hike

Share

The city’s firefighters have settled for a one-year contract calling for a 5% increase in the city’s contribution to their retirement plan rather than a 3.5% salary increase that had been proposed by the city.

The settlement ends a five-month dispute that saw the firefighters unsuccessfully take their case to the public with pickets at city-sponsored events and presentations at Neighborhood Watch meetings.

Fire Capt. Roy Markoski said the firefighters have not given up their fight to be among the top three fire departments in the South Bay in salary. Markoski claims Hawthorne has the busiest department yet is one of the lowest paid in the South Bay. He said talks on next year’s contract will begin in March.
