List of Groups Accepting Food Donations for the Needy Grows Longer : ‘Anything Is More Than What We Had Before’

Share
Times Staff Writer

Last year’s listing of places accepting food donations for the needy received such positive response, both from readers and recipients, that it has been updated. Again we are encouraging anyone who can to share with others less fortunate, even with the smallest donation. In the words of one program director, “Anything we get is more than what we had before.”

Over and over, we heard that the need for food is even greater this year. The number of places requesting assistance has increased and crowds at each have grown. Through a cooperative effort among different organizations, nothing received will go to waste.

There’s a location accepting donations within a short distance of anyone wanting to share. This year’s list is by no means considered complete, so if a nearby location can’t be found, remember there probably isn’t a neighborhood church or synagogue that doesn’t know people who could use donations and will distribute items received from members and non-members alike.

Will Refer to Other Locations

Today’s listing begins with organizations that have multiple outlets. If the office noted is not convenient, all have agreed to refer donations to their other locations. The remaining listings are divided by area of the Southland. In all cases, a telephone number is given for additional questions.

Many locations can accept all types of food. If there are limitations due to lack of refrigeration, these have been noted. The days and hours indicate when someone will be at the address to receive donations. Remember that all foods should be delivered in non-returnable containers.

The list of what to share is almost endless. Here are some suggestions:

Canned Foods--meats (hams), stew, tuna, soup, vegetables, fruit, fruit juices.

Other Non-Perishables--peanut butter, jams and jellies, pickles, olives.

Staples--flour, sugar, pasta, rice, beans, cornmeal, masa harina, stuffing mixes, cereal.

Fresh Foods--meats, produce, dairy products

Pastries/Baked Goods--pies, cookies, cakes, bread, rolls.

Although our emphasis is on sharing food, monetary and other types of contributions are welcomed by many of those listed. Telephone for details.

We’re presenting this listing before the holiday season, but the needs of these agencies never end. If time or money is tight right now, tuck the list away for later. Your contribution will be just as welcome anytime throughout 1987.
