Tennis Roundup : Upsets Continue at Wembley

Jonas B. Svensson of Sweden ousted Miloslav Mecir of Czechoslovakia Thursday as the seeded players continued to fall in the Benson and Hedges indoor championships.

Svensson, ranked 28 in the world, defeated the fourth-seeded Mecir, 6-3, 6-4, in 1 hour 20 minutes at Wembley, England.

Mecir, ranked ninth, became the sixth seeded player to be eliminated in the tournament. With three days to go, only Yannick Noah of France and Kevin Curren among the favorites are left.

Australia’s Pat Cash, a first-round winner over John McEnroe, also swept into the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Spain’s Sergio Casal.

McEnroe, meanwhile, reached the doubles semifinals with Peter Fleming. They beat the South African team of Christo Steyn and Danie Visser, 6-4, 7-6.

At Chicago, Pam Shriver defeated Barbara Potter, 6-3, 6-4; Claudia Kohde-Kilsch ousted Anne White, 6-3, 6-3, and Gabriela Sabatini beat Kate Gompert, 6-4, 6-1, to advance to the quarterfinals of a $150,000 women’s tournament.
