And, finally, Marty Breen kicked a 39-yard field goal with 1:41 left in the third quarter to give the Beavers a 10-7 upset over the Cougars Saturday at Provo, Utah.
Wilhelm completed 27 of 45 passes for 295 yards and 1 touchdown, setting three Oregon State single-season records in the process, even though he was sacked six times by the Cougars.
"Sacks? They're part of the game," Wilhelm said. "Six sacks are quite a lot, but when you throw the ball. . . .
"I have faith in my offensive line."
Wilhelm broke two records held by 1962 Heisman Trophy winner Terry Baker. He eclipsed Baker's records of 2,276 yards total offense and 1,738 yards passing. He also broke the record of 301 passing attempts held by Alvin White.
Wilhelm threw a five-yard touchdown pass to Damon Medlock to tie the score, 7-7, early in the third quarter.
The Beavers (3-7) forced five turnovers to stop Brigham Young's normally prolific passing attack.
BYU (6-3), in a three-team battle for the Western Athletic Conference championship and an automatic Holiday Bowl berth with Air Force and San Diego State, scored on Lakei Heimuli's one-yard run in the second quarter.
BYU's Steve Lindsley completed 12 of 23 passes for 103 yards before being replaced by Bob Jensen late in the third period. Jensen completed 6 of 14 passes for 112 yards, and took the Cougars to the Oregon State 14 in the final quarter. But his pass to Mark Bellini was stolen from the receiver's arms by linebacker Mike Matthews.
Cornerback Teddy Johnson set up Oregon State's touchdown with one interception and thwarted a potential BYU scoring drive with another, tying a school record with nine.
Williams, who came within one touchdown of the school's single-game record, scored on runs of 1, 35, 2 and 2 yards as the Sun Devils (9-0-1) built a 31-6 lead early in the second half.
Arizona State quarterback Jeff Van Raaphorst completed 9 of 19 passes for 173 yards with 1 interception--only his second in the last seven games. He has 5,813 career yards and can break Danny White's school record of 5,932 next week against Arizona.
The Sun Devils, trying for their first undefeated season since 1975 when they went 12-0, had 503 total yards.
Wichita State (3-8) scored on a nine-yard touchdown run by David Smith in the first quarter.
Oregon 27, Washington State 17--Chris Miller broke a record for completions held by Dan Fouts as the Ducks beat the Cougars at Eugene, Ore.
Miller had 20 completions in 35 attempts for 297 yards and 2 touchdowns, running his season total to 195 completions, 7 more than the record set by Fouts in 1970.
Miller, who also had surpassed Fouts' career records for passing yardage and total offense, tied Bob Berry's career mark for touchdown passes with 39.
With next week's game against Oregon State remaining, Miller, who has 2,246 yards passing this season, is on the verge of surpassing Fouts' single-season record of 2,390 set in 1970.
With the victory, Oregon improved its record to 4-6, 2-5, while Washington State dropped to 3-6-1, 2-5-1.
