In this case, Coach Danny Ford of Clemson didn’t mind going for a tie.

With the ball on the Maryland four and two seconds left, David Treadwell kicked a 21-yard field goal to make the final score 17-17 at Baltimore Saturday, giving Clemson the Atlantic Coast Conference championship.

Ford made his decision from the press box, where both he and Maryland Coach Bobby Ross had been banished for separate confrontations with officials.

Maryland is 1-3-1 in the ACC and 4-5-1 overall.

The Terrapins’ Dan Henning, however, completed 15 of 36 passes for 195 yards to set school single-season records for pass completions, yards passing and total offense.

His 182 completions exceeded Boomer Esiason’s 176 set in 1982; his 2,485 yards passing bettered Stan Gelbaugh’s 1985 mark of 2,475, and his 2,463 yards in total offense improved on Gelbaugh’s 2,385 last season.

Miami 23, Tulsa 10--At Miami, Vinny Testaverde threw two touchdown passes in a two-minute span late in the third quarter to keep No. 1 Miami on track for a confrontation with No. 3 Penn State, the only other unbeaten, untied Division I-A team.

Tulsa had closed to 10-3 in the third period, but Testaverde threw a 53-yard touchdown pass to Brian Blades and a 4-yarder to tight end Alfredo Roberts.

Testaverde, who completed 21 of 34 passes for 308 yards, broke Bernie Kosar’s school career passing record of 5,971 yards, finishing the game with 6,050 passing yards.

After the game, Miami Coach Jimmy Johnson said the Fiesta Bowl is planning to move its game from New Year’s Day to Jan. 2 and match the top-ranked Hurricanes against Penn State.

Miami (10-0) concludes its regular season against East Carolina Thanksgiving night.

South Carolina 48, Wake Forest 21--Freshman Todd Ellis passed for 214 yards and 2 touchdowns and broke three NCAA records at Columbia, S.C., as the Gamecocks improved to 3-6-1, and the Demon Deacons fell to 4-6.
