Gang Murals

Share

The Times article (Oct. 27), “Murals: Symbols of Pride or Violence to East L.A. Gangs?” illuminates some of the police insensitivity to the plight of the Chicano gang member. Do the detectives really believe murals are the cause of gang violence?

Through the years, various sociology studies have pointed out that poverty, racism, child abuse, drug use, high dropout rates and lack of opportunity, etc., are major root causes of gang violence. Until these factors are eliminated, gang violence will continue, regardless of the murals.

To denigrate the murals is to deny one of the few socially accepted outlets left to the gang members.
