FBI officials said they will investigate the shooting death of a Glendale man who was clutching a television remote control device that Glendale police said they mistook for a gun. Javier Alvarado, 23, was shot 12 times by three officers in June as he stood in an intersection waving the device. Investigations by the Los Angeles County district’s attorney’s office and Glendale police cleared the officers of any wrongdoing. Alvarado’s widow, however, later filed a $5-million wrongful-death claim that the city denied, opening the way for her to file a civil lawsuit. An autopsy revealed traces of the hallucinogenic drug phencyclidine (PCP) in Alvarado’s blood. FBI spokesman Fred Reagan said his agency’s investigation comes at the request of the U.S. Department of Justice.
