Smokers Urged to Give It Up

Share

Smokers will be encouraged to kick the habit today during the American Cancer Society’s “Great American Smokeout,” being celebrated across the country.

According to Frank Spinarski of the Orange County chapter of the American Cancer Society, the annual event is traditionally held a week before Thanksgiving so that successful quitters can celebrate a week of nonsmoking during the holidays.

In an effort to help smokers stay off cigarettes, various businesses and hospitals throughout the county will sponsor 37 “survival” stations to encourage struggling participants. Such spots of refuge include AirCal at John Wayne Airport, Irvine Ranch Farmer’s Market in Newport Beach, Cal State Fullerton and Ralphs Market in San Clemente. A victory party for successful quitters will be held beginning at 5 p.m. at the Hotel Meridien in Newport Beach.

The society also offers a booklet of tips to help quit smoking. They include exercising, hiding ashtrays and matches, drinking lots of liquids and snacking on sugarless gum or vegetables.
