Community College Roundup : Fullerton Rallies to Win

Fullerton College scored four points in the last nine seconds of regulation and outscored Saddleback, 14-5, in overtime as the Hornets defeated the Gauchos, 67-58, in the first round of the Fullerton tournament.

The Gauchos led, 53-49, with nine seconds left when Fullerton sophomore Bill Buda made a layup and was fouled. He missed the free throw but Hornet Alan Fraser got the rebound.

Fraser, who scored a game-high 15 points, missed his shot but Jim Mansfield got the rebound and was fouled with two seconds left. He made both free throws to send the game into overtime.

Vincent Smalls scored 12 points and Tom Manley 13 for the Gauchos (0-1).

In nonconference men’s basketball:

Orange Coast 77, MiraCosta 49--Rob Mase scored a game-high 26 points and Chuck McGavran added 17 as the Pirates (2-0) won at home.

East Los Angeles 77, Golden West 75--The Rustlers missed a three-point play in the last three seconds in their season opener at home. Jim Stewart scored 19 points for Golden West.

In South Coast Conference volleyball:

Golden West 3, Cerritos 0--The Rustlers’ 15-12, 15-10, 15-12, victory clinched second place and a berth in the Southern California regionals for the fourth straight year. Freshman outside hitter Susie Turner had 13 kills and 5 aces and freshman outside hitter Barrie Daffron had 12 kills and 5 aces for the Rustlers (8-3, 11-3).

In Orange Empire Conference volleyball:

Orange Coast 3, Riverside 0--The Pirates (9-0, 13-2) defeated the Tigers, 15-8, 15-10, 15-6, in Riverside for their 12th consecutive victory, which cliched a tie for the conference title with Citrus. The teams meet Friday. Ann Javage had 12 kills, Karen Nickel 10 kills and Kim Rochow 30 assists for the Pirates.

Citrus 3, Rancho Santiago 1--Despite 10 kills from Anne Oberschlake and 13 digs and 5 service aces from Melanie Schuler, the Dons lost to the Owls, 15-11, 15-10, 14-16, 15-11, at Santa Ana.

Cypress 3, Saddleback 2--Lisa Johnson had 19 kills and 24 assists to lead the Chargers (2-7) past the Gauchos, 16-18, 15-7, 11-15, 15-11, 16-14, at Cypress.

In South Coast Conference wrestling:

Cerritos 32, Golden West 14--Despite four wins and a tie, the Rustlers (3-4) lost to the Falcons in Huntington Beach. Golden West’s Brian Parisi beat Jim Valenzuela, 6-3. Fran McGraph defeated Rick Jorgensen, 8-2, and Brain Howey defeated Joe Powers, 6-5. Matt Hoffman defeated Norman Alcorn, 7-4.
