Wind-Blown Tree Branches Cause Power Outages in L.A.

Temporary power failures caused by wind-blown tree branches striking power lines affected about 10,000 homes and businesses in Los Angeles on Saturday, the Department of Water and Power reported.

The power outages, varying in duration from several minutes to several hours, began around 6 a.m., spokesmen for the Department of Water and Power said.

The most serious failures occurred along Ventura Boulevard in Woodland Hills, in the Fairfax-La Cienega area and on 84th Street. Other areas in Sylmar, Studio City and Hollywood experienced sporadic outages.

By late in the afternoon, the situation was “just about back to normal,” a spokesman said.

The same gusty winds that swept out of the desert to cause Saturday’s problems are expected to return today. Weather forecasters are calling for breezy conditions, with gusts of 30 m.p.h. near the canyons and 15 to 25 m.p.h. just about everywhere else.

The high today should be in the low to mid-80s.
