USOC Panel Backs Anchorage for ’94

Share

A key U.S. Olympic Committee panel recommended Saturday that Anchorage, Alaska, be the U.S. representative in the international competition to host the 1994 Olympic Winter Games.

The 23-member administrative committee, headed by USOC President Robert Helmick, also recommended to its 86-member executive board that Colorado Springs, Colo., be the site of an Olympic hall of fame.

And the committee also endorsed Oklahoma City as the location for the 1989 U.S. Olympic Festival.

The executive committee of the USOC, which convened a three-day meeting at Sparks, Nev., Friday, was scheduled to vote on the unanimous recommendations today.

Helmick said the main reason for sticking with Anchorage as the U.S. bid city for the 1994 Winter Olympics is that other American cities wouldn’t have enough time to make “a proper, full and adequate presentation” to the International Olympic Committee.

The IOC will make its decision on the 1994 Winter Olympics location during the 1988 Olympic Games at Seoul, South Korea.
