Bo Predicts There’ll Be No Further Predictions

After tuning up against the University of Hawaii a week from Saturday, Bo Schembechler and the Michigan Wolverines will start thinking about Arizona State and the Rose Bowl.

Meanwhile, Schembechler was asked if he was really sincere when he defended Jim Harbaugh after the quarterback went out on a limb and promised a win over Ohio State.

“By that time, on a Monday after you’ve just lost to Minnesota, what the hell do you care what he says,” Schembechler said.

What if Harbaugh guarantees a victory in the Rose Bowl?

“He won’t.”

What’s the injury situation?

“When I announce that anybody not in uniform Sunday ain’t going to Hawaii, they’ll all get healthy.”

Between Jim McMahon and Doug Flutie, guess which Chicago quarterback Brian Bosworth likes best?

Bosworth told Greg Stoda of the Dallas Times Herald about meeting Flutie on a plane trip he took with former Oklahoma teammate Tony Casillas.

“It was some kind of All-American trip and I didn’t really enjoy it,” Bosworth said. “I can easily sympathize with McMahon and some of his feelings. Flutie doesn’t come across like another athlete should. I would say he is arrogant.”

He added that he thinks Flutie looks too perfect. “I think he uses the same hair spray as Jimmy Johnson.”

Johnson is the coach at the University of Miami.

Trivia Time: What school has put the most undefeated, untied teams in the Rose Bowl? (Answer below.)

For What It’s Worth: George Martin, the 33-year-old defensive lineman of the New York Giants who made a one-handed interception of a pass by John Elway and ran 78 yards to a touchdown against Denver last Sunday, is a former backup basketball center at the University of Oregon.

In football, he started out as a tight end with the Ducks but didn’t play enough to catch a pass.

“At that time, we had the premier tight end in the nation,” Martin said.

His name was Russ Francis.

Add Elway: Asked if he was surprised by the Giants’ 19-16 victory in the final seconds, he said: “Being from Stanford, I never consider anything over until the clock says :00.”

Elway, of course, was the Stanford quarterback when Cal pulled off the miracle lateral play through the Cardinal band in 1982.

Ouch: Former Winnipeg Jets Coach Barry Long, on the success of ex-Jet Kirk McCaskill as a starting pitcher for the Angels: “When he was playing hockey, he only showed up every five days, too.”

Said Cleveland Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar last month, when asked by the Cleveland Plain Dealer to name his first favorite player: “I grew up following Jim Plunkett. I don’t know if Jim’s going to take offense to that.”

Not at all, but when they met at the Coliseum, Plunkett and the Raiders gave Kosar and the Browns a lesson, 27-14.

Trivia Answer: Ohio State and Alabama, with six each. Ohio State came here with perfect records after the regular seasons of 1920, 1954, 1968, 1970, 1975 and 1979. Alabama did likewise in 1925, 1926, 1930, 1934, 1937 and 1945. In the Rose Bowl, the Buckeyes were 2-4, the Crimson Tide 4-1-1.
