Kevin Scott ran 88 yards for a touchdown on a kickoff return in the fourth quarter Sunday, helping to propel Stanford to a 29-24 upset victory over No. 12-ranked Arizona.

Reserve quarterback Greg Ennis scored on a one-yard plunge with 5:30 left after passing for a key second-quarter score on a fake field goal attempt.

Playing before an estimated 50,000 mostly Japanese fans who waved pompons on cue and cheered the big plays, Stanford bottled up the Arizona offense for most of the game. A fumble and a pass interception set up Arizona’s first two touchdowns.

With Stanford leading, 29-17, Alfred Jenkins moved Arizona 91 yards in 11 plays, passing 11 yards to Branch McNeal for the touchdown.

Arizona got the ball again with 1:38 left, but an interception by Stanford’s Dave Wyman two plays later ended the comeback threat.

Arizona took a 7-0 lead in the first 50 seconds as Stanford’s Thomas Henley, returning the opening kickoff from his own end zone, fumbled on the Cardinal nine-yard line. Paul Kasprzyk recovered for Arizona, and two plays later, Arizona’s David Adams fumbled the ball into the end zone, where Val Bichekas fell on it for a touchdown.

John Paye marched Stanford back 80 yards in nine plays, including five pass completions in five attempts. Brad Muster ran the last 21 yards for the score.

Stanford went ahead, 9-7, when Arizona’s Derek Hill, circling back on a punt return from his own five, was tackled in the end zone by Kevin Richardson for a safety.

At the start of the second quarter, Paye marched Stanford 62 yards to the Arizona four in seven plays, including passes of 21 yards to Henley and 36 yards to Jeff James. When the drive faltered, David Sweeney faked a field goal attempt, while Ennis scooped up the ball and threw a four-yard touchdown pass to Jim Price.
