Quarterback Bobby Layne Dies

Bobby Layne, the combative Hall of Fame quarterback and master of the two-minute drill, died today of cardiac arrest, hospital officials said. He was 59.

Layne suffered from chronic liver problems and was hospitalized last month in Pontiac, Mich., for internal bleeding. The longtime Lubbock resident returned to the city Nov. 12 and was admitted to Methodist Hospital three days later with a similar condition. He was a football legend at the University of Texas and went on to star with the Detroit Lions and the Pittsburgh Steelers. Layne led the Lions to NFL titles in 1952 and 1953 and the championship game in 1954.
