Very Subtle Is a Big Winner
Undefeated Very Subtle built a solid lead early in the stretch and held off a closing drive by the favored Sacahuista to win the $500,000 Hollywood Starlet for 2-year-old fillies Sunday at Hollywood Park.
Her margin of victory was a half-length, and the daughter of Hoist The Silver went the mile in 1:36, equaling the stakes record set last year by I’m Splendid.
Each of the fillies carried 120 pounds.
Infringe, with Eddie Delahoussaye riding, finished third in the field of six.
It was the fourth victory for the chestnut filly that had sold for $30,000 last March.
Trainer Mel Stute bought her then and sold her to Carl Grinstead and Ben Rochelle of Chula Vista, Calif., with Stute continuing as her trainer. Grinstead and Rochelle had to pay another $30,000 to get Very Subtle into this race since she was not originally nominated.
