Rosemead : Special Election Date Set

Share

The Rosemead City Council has voted to hold a special election March 3 to fill the seat of former Councilman Louis Tury Jr., who resigned Oct. 13 after pleading guilty to mail fraud and paying kickbacks to obtain government contracts for his machine shop.

Under state law, Tury, who had been on the council since 1978 and whose term expires in April, 1990, was required to leave office.

The candidate filing deadline is Dec. 26 and the election is expected to cost the city about $20,000.

Also on the ballot will be a measure increasing the transient occupancy tax from 6% to 8%. That increase had been approved by the council last July but the passage of Proposition 62 last month requires the city to obtain voter approval for any tax increase.
