Dana Kirk, former basketball coach at Memphis State, pleaded not guilty to fraud and tax evasion charges in Memphis, Tenn.

Kirk, 51, was fired in September and was indicted last month by a grand jury that has been investigating allegations of sports gambling in the Mid-South for more than a 1 1/2 years.

The charges against Kirk, however, do not involve gambling, and he said that the grand jury had to change directions to indict him.
