Cash Rate Tops Favored 3-Horse Entry in $200,000 Race at Los Alamitos

A three-horse entry headed by defending champion Cash Rate is favored at 3-5 to win tonight’s $200,000 Champion of Champions quarter horse race at Los Alamitos.

Cash Rate, who has won three straight races and five of eight this year, is coupled with Six Popper and Countin the Cash in the Champion of Champions. B.F. and Jane Phillips and Minnie Rhea Wood share in the ownership of the three horses. All are out of the same mare, Cherry Lake, who won 19 races against both quarter horses and thoroughbreds during her career.

Gold Coast Express, who as a 3-year-old is half Cash Rate’s age, has been installed as the second choice in the 10-horse race at 3-1.

Gold Coast Express, who has won seven of nine starts this year, has faced Cash Rate just once, finishing 1 lengths behind him in the Hollywood Park Championship Oct. 4. That race was 440 yards, the same distance as the Champion of Champions.
