NONEXISTENCE

Share

Well, you’ve finally done it. You printed a letter by someone who doesn’t exist.

I am referring, of course, to Tricia McMillan’s letter, which was one of the pro-Berlin letters in the mail-in campaign by Beverly Hills High School students (Calendar Letters, Nov. 30).

By the way, McMillian doesn’t have an i in it, but that’s minor. The important thing is that Tricia McMillan, or Trillian to her friends, is a literary character. She, along with Zaphod Beeblebrox, Ford Prefect and others, are all characteres in the “Hitchhiker” trilogy, a series of books by Douglas Adams.

Does this mean that Calendar is now in the habit of printing letters by nonexistent people?

ARTHUR DENT

Orange

Only if they’re engaged in intergalactic travels, “Mr. Dent.” Dent, the hero of “Hitchhiker,” apparently had this letter forwarded to Calendar by Mike Wolffe of Planet Orange County.
