Fullerton Airport

Share

Like many other residents of southwest Fullerton, I am very concerned about noise and safety issues at Fullerton Municipal Airport. My anxiety was heightened after reading an article (Nov. 23) in which Fullerton Mayor A. B. (Buck) Catlin made this extraordinary remark: “It is a question of air commerce. The airport was there long before the homes were there.”

Catlin’s comment causes my concern to become one of alarm for the following reasons: First, it reflects a childlike understanding of a complex community issue. Second, it displays an astounding arrogance that becomes even more worrisome in light of how it was obtained. This was not a private remark, but a response to newspaper reporters! One can only shudder at the thought of what Catlin says in less public forums.

The Fullerton City Council must understand that this is not strictly an issue of “airport commerce.” It includes other significant variables, like homes, families, schools and school children. I pray that the balance of the City Council has greater depth of understanding than Catlin. I am, frankly, appalled.
