Easing Freeway Traffic

Share

Motorists favor staggered or flexible working hours over car-pooling or riding buses to ease traffic congestion according to an Orange County Transportation Commission survey. The study (Nov. 21) also found that Orange County motorists prefer adding more freeway lanes to the existing system.

I believe the study to be a step in the right direction, however, I would suggest immediate further surveys to include business owners and managers to see if they will implement these suggested flexible working hours for their employees. Although 45% of the respondents expressed an interest in working flexible hours, that is of little importance if business will not carry through with these employees’ suggestions.

It appears that Orange County Transportation Commission and other transportation districts need to build a public relations network that can help both the employee and employer implement these working hour changes, and make them a reality instead of good intentions.

It has been made clear by the people polled by their own Transportation Commission that car-pool lanes are the least favored means of improving the gridlock traffic situation that now exists. Drivers for Highway Safety believes that the Automobile Club of Southern California (AAA) is much more logical in its attitude of supporting construction of new freeways.
