Joining the Attack on the ‘Meanies’

Thanks for the attention you gave our Malibu sewer struggle (“Malibu and the Meanies,” Nov. 20). I’m really glad you gave L.A. County a good name, the “Meanies.” Our supervisor, Deane Dana, named us a long time ago--the “Beach Bullies.” So from now on, it’s battle between the “Beach Bullies and the Meanies!”

I’m getting caught up in the flip tone of your article. I need to tell you, and all your readers, that Malibu’s environmental survival is what’s really at stake here. The magnificent coastline and rural beauty are here today, for people to visit and enjoy. It could be Miami Beach tomorrow, if L.A. County has its way. Overdevelopment of a scenic area, and gridlock on Pacific Coast Highway, will be no pleasure for anyone! A questionable “Declared Health Hazard,” a disenfranchisement of the voters, a taxation without representation and an implied “conflict of interest” are all serious business! This isn’t a simple “being cheap,” as Deane Dana called us. (How can you be “cheap” when the cost is thousands of dollars?)

Well, “Elmer,” please promise to learn as much as you can about the county-proposed sewering of Malibu. Maybe you could talk to Congressman Tony Beilenson, state Sen. Gary Hart or state Assemblyman Tom Hayden--they do know the facts and have opposed the sewer system. I’m happy to read that you have a septic tank (I happen to have a sewer plant already, but that’s another whole story), that you wouldn’t want “uglies” on your hillside either, and that you don’t know how you stand on the issue--yet!

Just one more thing. If the county has its way with this, there will be some very fulfilled developers--what name can we assign to them?
