A diver who was attacked by a shark off Carmel improved to fair condition after undergoing surgery for extensive lacerations. Frank Gallo, 27, of San Jose, remained in intensive care but was out of danger, said nursing supervisor Cindy Lloyd of the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. “He’s doing wonderfully well,” the nursing supervisor said. “He’s alert and conversant, and since he’s a paramedic (for the Morgan Hill Fire Department) he’s interested in his treatment on an academic level.” Four surgeons operated on Gallo for jaw, neck, shoulder, rib cage and forearm injuries. Gallo was attacked by what was probably a great white shark while scuba diving with friends 30 feet underwater and 150 yards off Carmel River State Beach, also known as Monastery Beach. He said he never saw the shark but managed to push it away.
