PRO FOOTBALL : Cardinals, Eagles Tie in Overtime, 10-10

Neither the St. Louis Cardinals nor the Philadelphia Eagles got a kick out of their 10-10 NFL tie Sunday.

The Cardinals’ Eric Schubert missed three field goals, two in overtime, the last with five seconds left.

Philadelphia’s Paul McFadden missed two, one in the extra period.

Schubert, who replaced injured John Lee, missed his first field goal, a 31-yarder, with 4:39 left in the third quarter and the score 3-3.

“It was a high snap,” he said.

He had a 40-yarder blocked by Eagles defensive end Reggie White 4:05 into overtime.

“The snap was low,” he said.

On the 37-yard miss with five seconds remaining, Schubert said, “It might have been tipped, but when I hit it, I thought I was about three yards inside the the upright, just not a good feeling.”

McFadden, who has been criticized sharply by Eagles Coach Buddy Ryan, was crestfallen.

“If I have two more bad games, I really don’t deserve to be here because I haven’t earned the opportunity,” he said.

He blamed a bad snap for his first miss, a 46-yarder with the score tied 3-3 and 8:28 left in the second quarter.

He said he had no excuse for his 43-yard miss with 1:32 left in overtime.

Ryan was upset about his defense.

“It’s pretty hard to win a football game the way we played defense,” he said. “We stunk up the field. We didn’t get a rush on the quarterback. The linebackers wouldn’t tackle. Our secondary wouldn’t challenge the receiver in most cases. And we dropped interceptions.

“We played terrible against a team we should have dominated.”

St. Louis Coach Gene Stallings was proud of his team’s 10 sacks.

“We held the Eagles fast today. It’s a shame we didn’t get that last field goal.”

The tie left the Eagles with a 4-9-1 record and the Cardinals at 3-10-1.

There were some encouraging signs for both teams, however.

St. Louis quarterback Neil Lomax and Philadelphia running back Keith Byars, both maligned and benched during the season, starred for their respective teams. Lomax completed 30 of 48 passes for 390 yards, including a 48-yard touchdown pass to Roy Green with 2:39 left in regulation that forced overtime.

Byars, the Eagles’ top draft pick, rushed for 127 yards in 24 carries to help Philadelphia to a season-high 230 yards rushing.
