College Basketball Roundup : Vanderbilt Rallies to Upset Second-Ranked Indiana, 79-75

Barry Goheen scored 20 of his 26 points in the second half to lead Vanderbilt back from a nine-point deficit to a 79-75 upset of second-ranked Indiana Tuesday night at Nashville, Tenn.

Vanderbilt (4-1) took the lead for good at 65-64 on a free throw by Frank Kornet with 8:22 left and built a 74-68 edge with 3:04 to play before Indiana staged a final rally.

The Hoosiers (3-1) cut the Commodores’ lead to 74-71 on a free throw by Daryl Thomas with 2:36 left, but four free throws by Goheen offset two by Thomas to give Vanderbilt a 78-73 margin with 1:10 remaining.

Thomas scored with 1:00 left to cut the Commodores’ lead to 78-75, and Vanderbilt’s Barry Booker made a free throw with 20 seconds left to close out the scoring.

Indiana led, 41-32, after a three-point play by Steve Alford 16 seconds into the second half.

Alford scored 28 points, and Thomas added 21 for the Hoosiers.

Iowa 86, BYU 75--Jeff Moe came off the bench to score 28 points, and the fourth-ranked Hawkeyes beat the Cougars at Iowa City.

Moe scored 10 straight points to lead Iowa (7-0) to a 69-54 lead with 11:18 left. BYU (1-3) cut the lead to five points with two minutes left, but Iowa made 6 of 8 free throws to seal the victory.

Akron 73, Cleveland State 69--Shawn Roberts scored 17 points, and Eric McLaughlin had 16 as the Zips surprised the Vikings at Akron, Ohio.

The Zips (4-1) sent the game to overtime at 59-59 on a basket by Doug Schutz with 1:22 left. Ed Bryant made a three-point basket to pull Cleveland State (3-2) to within 71-69, but Schutz made two free throws to finish the scoring.

Michigan 73, Kent State 61--Glen Rice scored 26 points, and Gary Grant added 19 as the Wolverines bounced back from a surprising loss to Western Michigan by defeating the Golden Flashes at Ann Arbor, Mich.

Kent State (3-2) trailed only 57-54 with 4:27 to play, but Michigan (5-2) took control on baskets by Antoine Joubert and Grant.

Nevada Reno 80, USF 73--Darryl Owens scored 24 points, and Boris King added 20 at Reno as the Wolfpack handed the Dons their first defeat.

The Wolfpack (3-2), avenged a 117-93 defeat at USF last week. Anthony Mann and Mark McCathrion scored 16 each for USF (4-1).
