Iowa State Put on NCAA Probation

The National Collegiate Athletic Assn. took four 1987 football scholarships away from Iowa State Thursday and put the Big Eight school on probation for two years for recruiting rules violations.
The sanctions resulted from a two-year investigation of the Iowa State program under football Coach Jim Criner, who was fired Nov. 12 with two games left in the season. They include a public reprimand and censure of the program but no ban on television or bowl appearances.
None of the violations committed by Iowa State was made public, although the NCAA initially made 34 charges against the football program, which was accused of providing loans, rent, money, cash payments and other types of improper assistance to players and recruits.
The university said it would not appeal the penalties.
