NHL Roundup : Makela Leads Islanders Past Devils, 8-4

Mikko Makela scored two goals and assisted on another in a span of 7:16 as the New York Islanders beat the New Jersey Devils, 8-4, Thursday night at East Rutherford, N.J.

The game ended with a brawl that cleared both benches and lasted for several minutes before order was restored.

Bryan Trottier scored two goals and had an assist, and Mike Bossy added the 555th goal of his career plus two assists as the Islanders snapped a two-game losing streak and won for only the second time in seven games.

The Islanders scored seven straight goals in a 25:45 span covering the first and second periods.

Montreal 6, N.Y. Rangers 2--Larry Robinson got his 600th career assist, and John Kordic scored his first NHL goal in the Canadiens’ victory at Montreal.

Robinson is 22nd on the all-time career assist list but is ranked fourth among defensemen behind Bobby Orr, Denis Potvin and Brad Park.

Robinson and Bobby Smith assisted on Claude Lemieux’s goal as the Canadiens opened the scoring 1:19 into the game. Shayne Corson, Brian Skrudland, Gaston Gingras and Guy Carbonneau also scored for the Canadiens.

Boston 4, Vancouver 2--Ray Bourque, Reed Larson and Tom McCarthy scored second-period goals as the Bruins beat the Canucks at Boston for their fifth straight win.

Boston moved past idle Hartford into second place in the Adams Division, two games behind Montreal.

Goalie Doug Keans extended his unbeaten streak to 9 games (7-0-2) with 25 saves.

Philadelphia 5, Calgary 3--Lindsay Carson scored two goals in the third period as the Flyers extended the Flames’ winless streak at Philadelphia to 15 games.

The Flames last won a regular-season game in Philadelphia on Oct. 22, 1978, when they were based in Atlanta.

Carson snapped a 3-3 tie with a goal at 13:13 of the third period and added an empty-net goal with 20 seconds left.

Minnesota 6, Detroit 6--Adam Oates’ goal at 12:48 of the third period capped a five-goal rally that gave the Red Wings a tie with the North Stars at Detroit.

Ken Nilsson scored twice for Minnesota, and Darren Veitch had a pair of goals for the North Stars.
