College Basketball Roundup : Comegys, Edwards Lead DePaul Victory Over Louisville, 75-68

Center Dallas Comegys went inside for most of his 23 points, and Kevin Edwards added 20 points to lead unbeaten DePaul to a 75-68 victory over defending NCAA champion Louisville in a nationally televised college basketball game Saturday at Louisville.

The turning point came with 4:18 left in the first half and DePaul holding a 26-23 lead. Louisville center Pervis Ellison fouled Comegys, sending Comegys to the free-throw line and Ellison, a preseason All-American and Louisville’s leading scorer and rebounder, to the bench with two fouls.

Comegys made one of two free throws and went on to score DePaul’s next six points with Ellison out of the game as the Blue Demons increased their lead to 33-26 with 2:13 left in the half. DePaul led, 37-30, at the half and Louisville could not cut the deficit in the second half.

Comegys used back-to-back three-point plays to expand DePaul’s lead to 58-44 with 10:20 left in the game.

Edwards’ three-point goal with 5:30 remaining gave DePaul its largest lead at 69-52.

Louisville (3-4) used a full-court press most of the second half in an effort to get back in the game, but DePaul often broke it for easy baskets.

Terence Greene added 12 points for DePaul (5-0) and Kevin Golden had 10.

Ellison scored 20 points, 16 of them in the second half, to lead Louisville. Herbert Crook added 17.

Georgetown 82, Arizona 74--Reggie Williams scored 26 points, and Perry McDonald scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half as the Hoyas (5-0) held off the Wildcats (3-3) at Landover, Md.

Georgetown shot 72% in the first half to take a 44-33 lead, and increased the margin to 15 points with 13:19 left. Arizona rallied behind Tom Tolbert and Sean Elliot to close to within three points with two minutes remaining.

Williams then converted two free throws with 1:24 to play and McDonald added a layup off a steal to make it 78-71 with 60 seconds left.

Arizona got 17 points from Elliott and 15 points from Craig McMillan.

North Carolina 98, Jacksonville 69--Joe Wolf scored 21 points, and Dave Popson and Kenny Smith added 19 each as the Tar Heels (5-1) easily turned back the Dolphins (2-4) at Chapel Hill, N.C.

Jacksonville’s Ronnie Murphy, hitting four of five three-pointers, had a career-high 34 points. He scored 16 points in the first 5:44 of the second half as Jacksonville cut North Carolina’s 44-29 halftime margin down to 59-51, but Dolphins would get no closer.

Duke 76, Alabama 67--Freshman Phil Henderson keyed a 23-4 burst to help the Blue Devils (5-1) overcome an 11-point second half deficit and upset the Crimson Tide (3-2) at East Rutherford, N.J.

Henderson scored the last seven points in the Blue Devil explosion, lifting Duke to a 57-49 lead.

Tommy Amaker and Henderson scored 15 points each for the Blue Devils as Coach Mike Krcyzewski recorded his 200th career victory. Danny Ferry added 13 points.

Michael Ansley and Derrick McKey, both of whom fouled out in the game’s closing moments, led the Crimson Tide with 17 points each.

Purdue 89, Detroit 65--Todd Mitchell had 24 points and 11 rebounds and Troy Lewis scored 17 of his 19 points in the second half as the Boilermakers (5-0) routed the Titans (2-4) at Detroit.

Indiana 96, East Carolina 68--Darryl Thomas scored 19 of his 22 points in the first half, and the Hoosiers (5-1) rolled to a 49-22 halftime lead over the Pirates (4-2) in the Hoosier tournament at Bloomington, Ind.

In the opener, Doug Nobsek hit a three-point shot at the buzzer to lift Southern Illinois to an 86-85 victory over North Carolina Wilmington in the consolation game.

North Carolina Wilmington’s John Rowsom, who had 35 points in a first round loss to Indiana, scored 36 points to set a tournament scoring record.

Auburn 107, Southwestern Louisiana 91--Jeff Moore scored 27 points and Chris Morris added 23 for the Tigers (5-0), who led all the way against the Rajin’ Cajuns (2-2) at Auburn, Ala.

Randal Smith had 27 points for Southwestern Louisiana which trailed by as many as 28 points in the second half.

Illinois 81, Princeton 55--Ken Norman scored 23 points, his seventh straight 20-point game, to lead the Illini (7-0) past the Tigers (3-2) in the Illini tournament at Champaign, Ill.

Illinois struggled early against the deliberate Tigers before finally taking a 32-31 lead with two minutes left in the first half.

Oklahoma 109, Florida State 92--Tim McCalister scored 27 points and Harvey Grant scored 20 of his 22 points in the second half as the Sooners (5-1) handed the Seminoles (3-1) their 22nd straight road loss at Norman, Okla.

Oklahoma’s Darryl Kennedy and Florida State’s Peewee Barber each had 21 points.

Kansas 59, Colorado 56--Danny Manning scored 19 of his 23 points in the second half, and the Jayhawks (4-1) held off the Buffaloes (2-3) after building a 49-38 lead in a Big Eight opener at Lawrence, Kan.

It was the 37th straight home victory for the Jayhawks and the 25th straight Big Eight road loss for the Buffaloes.

Iowa 69, Drake 62--Roy Marble scored 9 of his 19 points in the last 7 1/2 minutes to help the Hawkeyes (8-0) survive a scare by the hot-shooting Bulldogs (3-4) at Des Moines.

Drake kept the game close by hitting 10 of 16 three-point shots. The Bulldogs raced to an early 13-point lead, fell behind by eight points early in the second half, then rallied to tie the score before Iowa finally was able to pull away.

Nevada Las Vegas 99, Nevada Reno 88--Armon Gilliam had a career-high 32 points for the unbeaten Rebels, who took command with a 15-6 run after building a 44-40 halftime lead at Reno.

Gerald Paddio added 22 points for the Rebels (6-0). Boris King had 24 points for the Wolf Pack (3-3).
