YOUNG PROSPECTS

Seeing the Austin-based roots-rockers Wild Seeds perform at Club Lingerie on Saturday was like watching a young prospect hit .275 in the minors. Although the quintet is capable of occasional highlights (the firestorming guitars of “Love Will Make You Weak,” the pretty-as-its-title “Big Mimosa Sky,” both from the band’s recent indie LP “Brave, Clean + Reverent”), the majority of its 50-minute set was as nondescript as it was well-intentioned.
Admittedly, playing to a late-arriving Hollywood crowd (mainly there to see headliner Rosie Flores) is tough, but lacking either a riveting stage presence or the nervy genius to twist these by-now-familiar country-blues-rock roots into something that sounds unmistakably new only makes it tougher. However, the Wild Seeds have only been together a year, and if they continue to play the game of constant touring and recording, the kids may prove they belong in the big leagues after all.
