The 1990 Goodwill Games in Seattle have been reduced by half to make them different from the Olympic Games and to lessen financial risks, according to organizers of the event.

The games will have only eight sports, open to the top eight teams or individuals from throughout the world, said Bob Walsh, a sports promoter in Seattle. Those sports will be track and field, basketball, boxing, wrestling, gymnastics, swimming, volleyball and ice skating.

About 2,000 athletes are expected in Seattle, instead of 5,000 as predicted earlier, and the event will cost about $35 million, rather than the $69.5 million originally budgeted, he said.

The cutbacks were made after Ted Turner of Turner Broadcasting, the event’s major sponsor, lost $26 million on the Moscow games.
