Josine Ianco-Starrels, former director/curator of the Municipal Art Gallery, has been named senior curator of the Long Beach Museum of Art.

Ianco-Starrels, who will assume the position March 1, developed innovative exhibition and educational programs for Municipal Art Gallery from 1976 to 1985, while helping to launch the careers of several Southern California artists.

“Ianco-Starrels is a progressive, energetic curator with an international perspective and a great depth of knowledge of contemporary California art,” said Long Beach Museum of Art Director Stephen Garrett in a prepared statement.

Asked about her curatorial intentions in the new post, Ianco-Starrels said, “I am interested in contemporary art, in providing a bridge between the work of artists and the audiences, in educational programs and in the video section of the museum.

“I’m going (to the museum) to learn all kinds of new things,” added Starrels, who, since 1972, has also compiled the “Art News” column for The Times.
