Santa Ana firefighters saved a house from a fire that began in an attached garage Tuesday night, but a passer-by who stopped to help fight the blaze was taken by paramedics to a hospital after complaining of chest pains, a fire department spokesman said.

Santa Ana Fire Department Battalion Chief Jim Dalton said the garage fire spread into the attic of a house in the 5100 block of West Kent Street but that firefighters kept it out of the rest of the house. Damage was estimated at $30,000, plus $2,000 for an automobile in the home’s driveway. The cause of the fire was under investigation.

An unidentified man stopped to help the owner of the house, who was fighting the fire in the garage with a garden hose before firefighters arrived, Dalton said. The man was transported to a nearby hospital by paramedics after experiencing chest pains, Dalton said. His name and condition were not immediately known, Dalton said.
