College Basketball Roundup : Indiana Backcourt Sparks Win Over Louisville

Indiana’s backcourt of Steve Alford and Keith Smart proved Tuesday night that experience can lift a small team over a taller one.

Alford and Smart combined for 30 points--Alford had 17 and Smith 13--and they also totaled 7 assists and 4 steals to led the Hoosiers to a 67-58 victory over Louisville Tuesday night at Bloomington, Ind.

Alford and Smart led a second-half rally. The Hoosiers went ahead for good, 50-49, with 7:17 remaining on a free throw by Smart. After the Cardinals built a 49-42 lead with 9:07 left against a rarely seen Indiana zone defense, the Cardinals failed to get off a shot on their next three possessions against a man-to-man defense.

Smart made a steal on one play, and Louisville guards made turnovers on the next two.

Ricky Calloway, who had been sidelined for three weeks this season with a knee injury, scored 19 points for Indiana (7-1). Louisville, last season’s NCAA champion, slipped to 4-5.

Illinois 92, Missouri 74--Ken Norman scored 24 points, and Tony Wysinger added 18 to led the Illini, ranked No. 9, at St. Louis. Illinois used surges in the closing minutes of the first half and the opening minutes of the second to pull away from the Tiger. Illinois (8-1) built its biggest lead at 61-42 before freshman Nathan Buntin rallied the Tigers (7-3) to within 70-59 with five minutes left. Derrick Chievous led Missouri with 25 points, and Buntin added 22.

Georgetown 94, Florida A&M; 65--The Hoyas played their second game without starting forwards Johnathan Edwards, who has an injured back, and Ronnie Highsmith, sidelined with a foot injury.

Freshman Mark Tillmon scored 17 points to lead Georgetown at Landover, Md. Reggie Williams and Dwayne Bryant scored 10 points apiece for the Hoyas (8-0). It was the first time Williams did not lead the Hoyas in scoring this season. Georgetown had six players in double figures. Leonard King, a junior forward, scored 26 points for the Rattlers (2-6).

Brigham Young 93, Pittsburgh 73--Forward Mike Smith, from Los Altos High in Hacienda Heights, had 34 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Cougars to the upset of the 14th-ranked Panthers at Provo, Utah. With the score, 9-9, BYU surged to a 38-11 lead with eight minutes left in the first half. Smith scored 11 points during the streak. Bobby Capener, who had 8 points during the run, added 23 for BYU (6-4). Charles Smith led Pitt (5-2) with 22 points.

New Mexico 90, Oklahoma St. 74--Forward Hunter Greene scored 26 points, his fifth straight game over 24, to lead the Lobos at Albuquerque, N.M.. New Mexico made 16 of 20 shots from the field in the second half. The Cowboys (3-5) got 21 points from senior forward Ray Alford. The Lobos (8-2) outscored the Cowboys, 14-4, over the final 3 1/2 minutes of the first half for a 44-31 lead and were never threatened.

Kansas St. 81, Northern Illinois 79--William Scott’s layup with six seconds left gave the Wildcats the win at Rockford, Ill. Randy Norman’s half-court shot at the buzzer fell off the front of the rim for the Huskies (2-8). Mitch Richmond led the Wildcats (8-2) with 20 points.

Louisiana Tech 70, Weber St. 69--The Wildcats’ Darryle McDaniel made a jump shot at the buzzer to tie the score at 62 and send the game into overtime. The Bulldogs had rallied from a 54-49 deficit with six minutes left to force the overtime at Odgen, Utah. Robert Godbolt, a senior forward, scored 21 points, including 7 in overtime, to lead the Bulldogs. Weber State is 1-9; Louisiana Tech 5-4.

Utah 66, Army 53--The Utes, behind 20 points by Mitch Smith, won the Utah Tournament at Salt Lake City. Albert Springs added 13 points for Utah (8-2). Army is 2-5.

St. Mary’s defeated North Texas State, 66-53, in the third-place game.
