Redondo Beach : Recreational Project OKd

After lengthy discussion, the City Council has unanimously approved guidelines for a regional multimillion-dollar recreational project at Aviation Park in north Redondo.

The guidelines were developed by the city staff and Recreation and Parks Commission for consultants who will make specific recommendations on development in about a year.

The consultants have not been hired, but the Redevelopment Agency previously allocated $100,000 for the work.

The guidelines include keeping the park’s auditorium and gymnasium and building an aquatic complex on the 14-acre site. However, the site is divided into two parcels--three acres and 11 acres--and they must be separate and economically independent because of lease restrictions.

The three-acre parcel may be commercially developed, according to the guidelines. The city is buying that parcel from the South Bay Union High School District and should own it in 15 years, city officials said.

The city is leasing the 11 acres from the school district until 2085. In 1984, voters approved an initiative designating that parcel for recreation.

The Aviation High School site has been designated a redevelopment project, and money from tax increments could be used to underwrite a bond issue to develop the recreational project, according to the guidelines.
