Walnut : Rush for Building Permits
Developers trying to get projects approved before Jan. 1, when they will have to pay school fees, last week filed for permits for nearly 300 houses. The new homes will range in size from 2,000 to 2,900 square feet, saving the developers between $3,000 and $4,500 per home.
Under a new state law, developers must pay $1.50 per square foot for residential projects beginning in 1987. The purpose of the law is to help local schools cope with increased attendance resulting from housing developments by providing them with funds for capital improvements.
Walnut, with large tracts of undeveloped land, has a population of 20,000, but the general plan calls for 30,000 residents.
