About 43,000 customers were without power for about a minute after a Los Angeles Department of Water and Power transformer failed, a spokesman for the utility said. The 7:51 a.m. outage caused DWP panels to light up and controllers immediately switched all power to an auxiliary transformer, spokesman Dick Nelson said. The outage affected an area ranging from downtown to Hollywood, where at least a couple of radio stations were temporarily knocked off the air. The cause of the transformer problem was being investigated.
