PUTNAM, Tex. — Cleanup crews on Wednesday vacuumed up toxic ethylene glycol leaking from two tank cars of a Missouri Pacific freight train that derailed into a creek, a railroad spokesman said.
Authorities said a bearing broke on the train Tuesday night, causing almost half of the cars on the 50-car train to derail. Four families that lived nearby were evacuated, but they were allowed to return to their homes Wednesday morning.
“The ethylene glycol, or antifreeze, is leaking at about three gallons a minute,” spokesman Mark Davis said.
