A San Diego County sheriff’s deputy shot and wounded a man in Solana Beach early Thursday after responding to complaints of gunshots near a neighborhood park, the Sheriff’s Department said.

The victim, Rosendo Ramirez, 21, whose address was unknown, was shot once in the left arm about midnight, authorities said. Ramirez was treated overnight at Scripps Memorial Hospital in Encinitas and discharged, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Sheriff’s homicide detectives were investigating the incident. No charges had been filed in connection with the shooting.

A sheriff’s statement gave the following account:

About midnight, Deputy Sheriff Michael Stanewich and a partner responded to reports of gunshots near Valley Avenue and Hernandez Street. In a yard in the 800 block of Hernandez, the deputies observed a group of men firing various weapons in a “random” manner. Authorities could not say if the shooting was intended as New Year’s revelry or was connected to some dispute.

The officers identified themselves, the statement continued, but one man, later identified as Ramirez, continued to approach deputy Stanewich. When the man refused to yield, authorities said, Stanewich fired one shot from his service revolver, striking Ramirez in the left arm.

At the scene, officers said they recovered “numerous” bullets and spent casings from “large and small caliber weapons and shotguns.” Stanewich, 33, is a six-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Department who has been stationed in Encinitas for the past two years, authorities said.
