A group led by Drew Lewis, former U.S. transportation secretary, has signed a three-year option to buy the New England Patriots. The agreement, signed Dec. 31 to beat the new federal tax laws, gives the Lewis group, MEP Partners, three years to buy the team and closes negotiations with other parties, Patriot spokesman Jim Greenidge said.

The agreement does not include options for either Sullivan Stadium or the adjacent harness race track in Foxboro, Mass.
