A small earthquake measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale shook the desert south of Palm Springs, a California Institute of Technology spokesman said. The quake, the second of the new year in the area, occurred at 10:02 a.m. and was centered 21 miles south of the city, Caltech spokesman Robert Finn said. No damage or injuries were reported.
