“Live Without a Net.” Van Halen. “David Lee Roth.” Both from Warner Reprise. $29.98 and $19.98 respectively. This isn’t a true video battle of the bands because “Roth” is a half-hour series of promo clips (including “Just a Gigolo” and “California Girls”) while “Net” is a 90-minute concert video, but it’s tempting to match Roth against his old mates--and he certainly comes out on top. His humor is awfully broad-minded (in more ways than one), but there’s lots of inviting self-mockery. Van Halen still has that party spirit, but it’s not nearly as disarming without Roth out front.
