Santa Ana : Ground Breaking Set for Century High School
Work will begin Sunday on Century High School, which is scheduled to open in the 1988-89 school year and will stress the use of computers and high-technology subjects.
A ground-breaking ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. at 1401 S. Grand Ave.
Edward S. Krass, superintendent of the Santa Ana Unified School District, said Century High will serve 1,800 students. In addition to standard high school subjects, computer science, engineering, medical services, drafting and electronics will be taught. Engineers and other specialists from county high-tech companies will be invited to lecture at many classes, Krass said.
The new school will be on about 25 acres in southeast Santa Ana. The cost of the land was about $12.3 million, and construction is expected to cost an additional $18.5 million.
The school will contain 154,346 square feet of rooms, including a library, auditorium, gymnasium and 10 computer laboratories.
Assistant Supt. Rudy Castruita said all teachers at the new high school will have to be proficient in computer use, and “all incoming freshmen will be required to take a keyboard/computer literacy class.”
