Woman, Who as Teen-Ager Struck Out Ruth and Gehrig, Dies
Virne Mitchell Gilbert, who as a teen-ager struck out baseball stars Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, has died. She was 74.
Mrs. Gilbert, known as Jackie, died Wednesday at her Fort Oglethorpe home.
On April 2, 1931, when Mrs. Gilbert was 17, she took the mound in the first inning of an exhibition game between the New York Yankees and the minor league Chattanooga Lookouts and proceeded to strike out the two sluggers.
The feat generally was believed to be a publicity stunt, but Mrs. Gilbert always said the strikeouts were legitimate.
A widow, Mrs. Gilbert is survived by a nephew and several cousins.
