Tennis Roundup : Zina Garrison Beats Turnbull and Will Meet Shriver for Title

Zina Garrison surged into the final of the $150,000 New South Wales Women’s Open tennis tournament at Sydney, Australia, today with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Wendy Turnbull.

Garrison, from Houston, upset third-seeded Helena Sukova in Friday’s quarterfinals, 6-3, 6-1.

Sunday, she will play second-seeded Pam Shriver, who defeated Manuela Maleeva of Bulgaria, 6-3, 6-3.

Turnbull beat Lori McNeil, 6-4, 7-5, in a quarterfinal match Friday, while Shriver defeated Sweden’s Catarina Lindqvist, 6-4, 6-2, and Maleeva qualified for the semifinals by ousting Japan’s Etsuko Inoue, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

“Over a five-month period, this is the most consistent tennis I have played in my career,” Shriver said.

At Auckland, New Zealand, top-seeded Miloslav Mecir of Czechoslovakia and Michiel Schapers of the Netherlands advanced to the singles final of the New Zealand Open.

Mecir won his semifinal match against Derrick Rostagno, 6-2, 6-1, while Schapers had a tougher time getting past Australian Carl Limberger, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Rostagno admitted to feeling a little tired after his 6-3, 5-7, 10-8 victory over fourth-seeded Ramesh Krishnan of India Friday.
