Irvine Tries to Run Win Streak Against Pacific to 14
If basketball were solely a numbers game, UC Irvine would be looking at a 3-2 Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. record after tonight’s 7:30 game at the Bren Center against the University of the Pacific.
Irvine is 5-0 at home this season and 2-0 at the Bren Center, Pacific is 1-5 on the road and the Anteaters have won all of their last 13 meetings with the Tigers.
Currently, the teams are tied at 2-2 in the PCAA, although Pacific is coming off losses to New Mexico State and CS Long Beach. The Tigers shot just 31.7% from the field against Long Beach and are at 39.8% for the season.
Pacific’s best player is 6-9 senior center Brent Counts, the son of former Laker center Mel. Counts is averaging 17.3 points and 6.5 rebounds a game.
Irvine, 7-6 overall, is 2-1 since moving 6-5 forward Frank Woods into the starting lineup. Despite playing with torn knee cartilage and a pulled hamstring, Woods has scored 15, 17 and 19 points in the three games he has started.
